Continuing Education Program in Newborn Nursing Care
Course Outline
The program is conducted three times per year and is hosted by staff in Victoria's four neonatal intensive care units. It consists of 18 contact hours over four half days. Neonatal Nurses, Neonatologists and Neonatal Fellows facilitate the sessions.
Discussion, demonstration, nursery tours, case presentations and didactic teaching/learning formats are utilized throughout the program. The program is an Australian College of Midwives endorsed CPD activity.
Topics include:
- Resuscitation of the newborn (including perinatal asphyxia)
- Stabilization of the neonate prior to transport
- Respiratory Distress
- Management of neonatal abstinence syndrome
- Infant feeding
- Neonatal jaundice
- Common congenital abnormalities
- Care of the neonate with a suspected cardiac condition
- Neonatal seizures
- Hypoglycaemia
- Family centred neonatal and developmental care
- Infant immunization
- Discharging the Level 3 infant closer to home.
